The 21st National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party will be held in 2027. During the Congress, the CPC will elect the leaders of the Party and the country for the next five years, which includes the 200-member Central Committee, the 23-member Politburo, and the 7-member Standing Committee of the Politburo (PSC). It is widely expected that Xi Jinping and Li Qiang will be re-elected as the General Secretary of the CPC and as the second-ranking member of the PSC in 2027, to maintain policy stability and continuity.
However, what will be more consequential for China moving into the 2030s is the anticipated election of several members of the “1970s generation” of Chinese officials, i.e. officials born shortly before or after 1970, to the Central Committee or to the Politburo. This is because these leaders are expected to take the reins of the Party in 2032 or 2037, whether or not Xi Jinping chooses to step down at that time. Hence, this website aims to shed some light on the backgrounds and achievements of 21 of the most prominent members of this future generation of China’s leaders to predict the future trajectory of China.
