Arguably China’s most high-profile 1970s generation female politician due to her leadership role in Sichuan province, the country’s fifth-largest by GDP and the main “gateway to the West.” Also an alternate of the 20th Central Committee.

Born in 1969 in Zhejiang. Majored in Business Administration from Tongji University in Shanghai and also earned a MBA from the same university. After graduation, she remained in Shanghai to work as a local leader in Zhabei District, Nanhui District, Hongkou District, and then finally Putuo District. In 2017, she was elevated to the Standing Committee of the Shanghai Municipal Committee, and was also named as the youngest female alternate member to the 19th Central Committee that year. In 2018, she was transferred to Jiangxi to help lead the provincial government there. After three years, she was sent to Sichuan as a member of the provincial Standing Committee and the Secretary of Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan and a top-10 ranked municipal economy. In the process she became the youngest leader of a provincial capital. In 2023, she was promoted to Deputy Secretary of Sichuan, and then in 2024 she was appointed Secretary of the Party Group as well as Governor. This made her the second-youngest governor in China behind Liu Jie and the youngest female governor.
Biography
Shi can be compared to Shen Yiqin, currently the most high-ranking female politician in China and a State Councillor who was formerly Governor and Party Secretary of Guizhou. Can also be compared to Sun Chunlan, who is a former Vice Premier and Politburo member who was formerly Party Secretary of Fujian and Tianjin. A former Sichuan Governor, Yin Li, is now the Party Secretary of Beijing and a Politburo member.
