Biography
Born in 1969 in Hubei. Graduated from Tsinghua University with a bachelor’s degree in Automation and Business Management and a PhD in Systems Engineering, and from Harvard University with a Master of Public Administration (Kennedy School). Was the youngest deputy governor and governor in the history of the PBOC, which is China’s central bank. Worked for 20 years at the foreign exchange reserve manager of China (SAFE) and also worked as general manager of China Investment Corporation (Singapore), which is China’s sovereign wealth fund, for one year. Currently serves under Cai Qi, who is the Party Secretary of Beijing and fifth-ranked member of the PSC.
Comparisons
In terms of education, he can be compared to Hu Jintao and Xi Jinping, who both graduated from Tsinghua with their bachelor’s degrees in engineering, and Jiang Zemin, who had a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He is also similar to Liu He, the former Vice Premier, who also earned an MPA degree from the Harvard Kennedy School.
