Chinese Academy of Sciences

Location: Beijing

Subsidiaries/Affiliates: CAS Key Laboratory of Quantum Information (USTC), CAS Center for Excellence in Quantum Information and Quantum Physics, Quantum Computation Research Center, CAS Institute of Physics, CAS Cold Atom

Summary: While based in Beijing, most of CAS quantum computing labs are based in Hefei, Anhui, where research is conducted in conjunction with the affiliated University of Science and Technology of China (USTC). Many CAS researchers specializing in quantum information went on to found successful private companies, including QuantumCTek, Origin Quantum, and CAS Cold Atom Technology. CAS also acts as the ringleader of a group of universities, research centers, and companies that collaborate in researching and commercializing quantum information technology. Both CAS Cold Atom and Origin Quantum have made major breakthroughs with their quantum computers. CAS also controls quantum research centers outside of Hefei, most notably the Shanghai Quantum Science Research Center.

Tsinghua University

Location: Beijing

Subsidiaries/Affiliates: Center for Quantum Information (CQI), Beijing Academy of Quantum Information Science (BAQIS), Institute for Interdisciplinary Information Sciences

Summary: Tsinghua is the second-leading center for quantum information research in China after CAS/USTC, and the university faculty boasts renowned scholars such as Andrew Chi-Chih Yao and Duan Luming. In particular, while Professor Yao is an elder statesmen in quantum science, Professor Duan has led the CQI in achieving breakthroughs with quantum simulators using trapped ions and also with multiplexed quantum memory. Besides, Tsinghua has teamed up with Peking University and CAS to establish the Beijing Academy of Quantum Information Science which researches quantum materials and photons. Tsinghua also cooperates with Tencent’s Quantum Lab to explore applications for AI and quantum science.
