Sinopec
Location: Beijing
Subsidiaries/Affiliates: Sinopec Xiong'an New Energy Co. Ltd, Sinopec Capital
Summary: Sinopec is China’s largest producer of hydrogen energy (which is produced by applying electrolysis to water) and the world's largest operator of hydrogen refueling stations. Besides, its biofuels are increasingly used in the production of “green hydrogen” to replace fossil fuels and ensure that no emissions are created in the process. The company also builds pipelines to transport green hydrogen produced in its facilities in Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia to coastal areas. Sinopec is currently building what will be the world's largest integrated green hydrogen and green ammonia project located in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia.
China National Offshore Oil Corporation
Location: Beijing
Subsidiaries/Affiliates: CNOOC Gas & Power Group, CNOOC Energy Technology & Services
Summary: CNOOC has a virtual monopoly over drilling for fossil fuels off of China’s coastal waters. Increasingly, however, it is using its marine engineering and infrastructure expertise to create offshore green hydrogen facilities that convert seawater into hydrogen fuel, since seawater is more abundant and more easily accessible than freshwater. These hydrogen facilities are powered by offshore wind and solar farms to maintain zero emissions. CNOOC has also pioneered the use of liquid hydrogen to transport hydrogen energy across the ocean, which could eventually allow China to become a net exporter of hydrogen fuel.
